In the Name of Desirable and Responsible Beauty Packaging

Released By Bormioli Luigi Corporation

With only a few days to go until the Luxe Pack New York trade show, beauty packaging players are busy with a wide range of topics, such as trends, inspirations, innovations, and new launches. Among the current hot topics, one question stands out: how can a compromise be reached between attractive packaging and environmental responsibility? In this context, Bormioli Luigi confirms its positioning of ultra-premium production combined with sustainable development innovation: raw materials, energy, processes, eco-designed solutions, decorations.

When Packaging Becomes an Object of Desire

While the primary function of packaging is to contain, preserve, and protect, it is now more than ever a tool of allure, communicating through aesthetics, touch, and ritual. Its shape, materials, and finish create an experience that drives the purchase decision. Fragrance is no exception to this rule—quite the opposite. Flacons are becoming increasingly bold, and their caps are turning into collector’s items. Bormioli Luigi is seeing a growing demand for glass caps featuring striking shapes, hot-stamped decorations, and engravings.

At this level of premium development, the request for sustainability arises. Using a refillable bottle implies that the consumer embraces a sustainable approach to their product, which only gains further value through sumptuous decoration. To this end, Bormioli Luigi offers a wide array of signature finishes: internal or external lacquering, metallization, sputtering, textured effects, frosting, engraving, and protective varnishes.

Premium or Nothing

Major American brands have a strong appetite for spectacular products that can set them apart from the competition. They are unwilling to compromise on an iconic glass shape or a remarkable finish whose creativity sparks consumer emotion and brand loyalty. However, environmental concerns are becoming increasingly paramount. “Clients expect us to innovate with bold product solutions and decoration techniques. We support them from the initial project brief with more responsible proposals. It is up to us to provide them with alternatives informed by Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). Our group has a dedicated tool that covers the entire supply chain—from raw materials to product delivery, including processes and decoration,” explains Jennifer Duffy, Manager of the American subsidiary.

While the premium value of beauty packaging is non-negotiable, brands are now exploring ways to mitigate its environmental footprint. They are acutely aware of consumer demand for purpose-driven and transparent products. Among the technical and aesthetic solutions offered by Bormioli Luigi is lightweight glass. The Ecoline range was developed using thinner, lighter glass forms without compromising mechanical strength.

Bormioli Luigi can also apply this expertise to custom lightweight bottles, following a preliminary technical assessment.

Additionally, the company incorporates post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass, typically around 15%.

Another major focus for brands is the move toward mono-material products to facilitate end-of-life recycling. To this end, screw-neck bottles provide an effective solution, allowing the pump to be easily unscrewed so the glass can be separated and sorted for recycling.

Bormioli Luigi: At the Forefront of Refillability

In recent years, it has become common for major fragrance houses to transition their iconic bottles into refillable versions, while emerging brands now treat refillability as a standard requirement. Refillable bottles offer a compelling case for extended product longevity. “In the United States, this trend is expanding across the entire beauty sector. Brands are paying close attention to refillable offerings in skincare and make-up. They are increasingly open to turnkey solutions that they can then personalize through decoration,” adds Jennifer Duffy.

Recently launched, the Reverre refillable jar is a patented concept featuring a removable glass inner cup. This design ensures it is easy to recycle and, of course, highly customizable through various decoration techniques, such as inner or outer lacquering, Safe Glass protection, and UV protection. Brands also have the option of requesting custom shapes through bespoke development.

As for the Makeup category, the standout innovation is Swing, a new generation of refillable glass packaging for lip products. Slim, lightweight, and durable, its components can be separated in a single gesture, allowing for an easy lipstick replacement and efficient end-of-life recycling.

Agile and Aesthetic Solutions

More than ever, beauty brands are closely monitoring production costs and lead times. They expect their partners to provide agile implementation and development, offering turnkey innovations suitable for short and rapid production runs. At the same time, they demand a wide and creative range of customization options.

To meet these needs, Bormioli Luigi offers an extensive collection of stock products across all segments: fragrance, skincare, makeup, and home fragrance. Notably, two new bottle models will be unveiled at the upcoming Luxe Pack New York.

To develop differentiating products that evoke an emotional response, Bormioli Luigi is focusing its innovation on new techniques and lower-impact materials. A prime example is sputtering: while it delivers a finish similar to vacuum metallization, it does not interfere with the recycling stream of the bottle.
